Feminism... It's Not Funny.

Before reading the post, watch this short parody feminist make-up tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lET-WXTsSwc.

From popular satirical cartoons like Family Guy and The Simpsons, to various movies and television shows, feminism is shown a similar light as the video posted above. Why does the media continuously air things that show feminism in a bad light? Where are the shows that have a proud feminist with a great relationship, a job she isn't always showcasing her willingness and need to fight every step of the way and where she

Feminists are usually the punchline of jokes. On The Simpsons, young Lisa Simpson is often abhorred by fellow female students and enthralled in strong convictions that amount to nothing of importance. Family Guy had an episode where Peter was required to take sensitivity training after sexually harrasing a female employee. Peter ended up joining a feminist group, crying, becoming overly emotionally, sporting a bumper sticker that read 'My other penis is a vagina' and breast-feeding Stewie. I'm not saying I didn't laugh, but I have noticed that while I can think of two instances in popular cartoon series that make fun of feminism, I can't recall a television showing depicting feminism in a positive manner.

In movies, feminists are often depicted as man hating, non-shaving, single, lesbians and anti-make up. Rather than being depicted as active and relevant citizens of society, they're usually shown as the undesirable other. The more this is shown, the more this is believed and adopted into mainstream society's norms.

Although the girl in the video wrote the following disclaimer after her video received a lot of attention, there's a trend that needs to be addressed. I've copied it and pasted it, over-punctuation, grammatical errors and all.

"WOW UH hi folks i didn't realize this thing would get this popular (or notorious), but thanks for taking the time to watch!

in case you didn't catch on, this video is supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek parody on some of society's crazy stereotypes of feminists. it's honestly not supposed to be serious or be taken seriously?????

this video is not intended to offend anyone; if you want to take anything from it (which you don't have to), it's meant to play on some common misconceptions about feminism. there is a difference between feminism and misandry, and this video is a satire based on the fact that these two things get mixed up all too often.

please though this video is ***not serious***: i'm NOT trying to get people to run into the streets and start ripping other people's throats out or performing blood sacrifices or anything like that, nor am i trying to undermine the feminist movement or tell other feminists what to do/how to live their lives/etc. i'm just having fun poking at some misconceptions and tropes.
whether the delivery of the overall punchline is a success or not, this video is satire above all else, and such things are not supposed to be taken in earnest."

The lack of the media giving feminism positive attention, even in our down time, can program in young minds that feminism is something unpleasant. Think about it, when's the last time you heard someone ask if someone was a feminist in a positive manner?
